Hermann Einsele, MD, FRCP, is a Full Professor of Internal Medicine and has been Director of the Department of Internal Medicine II of the University Hospital Würzburg, Germany, since 2004. Following his medical training at the Universities of Tübingen, Manchester, and London, Professor Einsele became a research fellow in the Department of Haematology, Oncology, Rheumatology, and Immunology at the University of Tübingen, Germany. Professor Einsele was board-certified in Internal Medicine in 1991 and in Haematology/Oncology in 1996. In 1999, he was promoted to the role of Associate Professor. He was Visiting Professor at the City of Hope Hospital, Duarte, CA and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center Seattle, USA.
From 2011 to 2015 and again since 2022, Professor Einsele has been Vice Dean of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Würzburg. In 2021, he was an Advisory Board Member in the funding program "Zwanzig20 - Partnership for Innovation" of the German federal ministry of education and research (BMBF), and from 2015 to 2021 he was Vice President of the University of Würzburg. Since 2018, he has been the chair of the scientific working group on immunotherapy for hematological malignancies of the European Hematology Association. Since 2022, Professor Einsele has held the post of Executive Chairman of the German Society of Hematology and Oncology.
In 2003, he received the van Bekkum Award, the highest Annual European award for research in the field of stem cell transplantation. In 2011, he was elected as an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists, London, UK, and in 2012, he was Nobel Lecturer for Stem Cell Biology/ Transplantation, Nobel Forum Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden. Since 2014, he has been a member of the Academy of Sciences and Literature, Mainz, Germany, and he was elected as an Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) “Highly Cited Researcher” in the Clinical Medicine category in 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022. In 2022, Professor Einsele received the Erasmus Hematology Award from the Erasmus University Medical Center, Rotterdam, Netherlands, and the Bavarian constitutional medal.
Hermann Einsele is an expert in the field of multiple myeloma, and his research focuses on CAR T cell therapy, bi-specific antibodies, adoptive immunotherapy, and stem cell transplantation.
