Dr. Martha L. Louzada, BSc, MD, MSc, Associate Professor of Medicine at University of Western Ontario (UWO) is a Brazilian-born Hematologist. She holds a Cross Appointment in Oncology through the London Regional Cancer Program (LRCP) and a Cross Appointment as Associate Professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, UWO from 2013 to present.
Dr. Louzada took her medical training in Rio de Janeiro - Brazil. She received her undergraduate degree in Biology with a Bachelor’s degree in Genetics at Rio de Janeiro Federal University and obtained her medical degree from S.Marques School of Medicine in December 1999, both with highest honors. After completing her Internal Medicine Residency Program, she did a 3-year Hematology Residency program at Instituto Nacional de Cancer (National Cancer Institute). This gave her a strong background in malignant Hematology and bone marrow transplantation.
In 2006, she embarked on a new experience in North America coming to Ottawa, Canada, for a 3- year postdoctoral fellowship in Thrombosis along with a Masters in Epidemiology and Community Medicine Program at the University of Ottawa / Ottawa Hospital, Canada. It was in Ottawa that her research career started. In October 2009 she was awarded the Phil Wells Trainee Research Award at the University of Ottawa, recognizing Excellence in Hematology Research. She received her Master’s in Epidemiology degree in January 2011.
She is currently the Multiple Myeloma Clinical Trials Director and Chair of the Malignant Hematology Research Unit at LRCP. Since joining the Division of Hematology at University of Western Ontario and London Health Sciences Centre, Dr. Louzada has participated in a number of clinical trials in thrombosis and multiple myeloma which has led to various journal publications and international presentations; opening her pathway to practice changing medicine.
