Researcher
Università Vita-Salute San Raffaele, Italy
In 2014, Dr. Enrico Milan received his PhD in Molecular Medicine at Università Vita- Salute San Raffaele investigating the role of autophagy in normal and malignant plasma cells in the lab of Age-Related Diseases headed by Dr. Simone Cenci (Pengo et al., Nat Immunol 2013, Milan et al., Autophagy 2015). During these years, he characterized the functions of the autophagic receptor of ubiquitinated proteins p62/SQSTM1 in multiple myeloma and aging through an extensive and unbiased proteomic analysis of its interactors (Milan et al., Autophagy 2015; Milan et al., J Clin Immunol. 2016).
In 2015, he was visiting postdoctoral fellow in Prof. Jorge Moscat Lab at Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Center, La Jolla CA, USA. After his return in Italy, he was awarded by international funding agencies with the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF) Junior Research Award 2016 and the International Myeloma Foundation (IMF) Brian D. Novis Research grant 2019. In 2018, he also received the Fondazione Cariplo grant for young researchers.
As principal investigator, he characterized the biological function of multiple myeloma tumor suppressor FAM46C/TENT5C in regulating antibody secretion and proliferation in plasma cells (Fucci et al., Cell Reports 2020, Perini et al., FEBS J. 2021). This opened his independent lines of research focused on investigating new molecular pathway impacting on proteostasis, antibody synthesis and secretion, disease progression and drug sensitivity in myeloma and AL amyloidoisis. Dr. Milan is author of 16 scientific publications (3 first-authored and 3 last-authored) in recognized peer-reviewed journals and was selected as speaker in international congresses and workshops (e.g., ISA 2022, Heidelberg, Germany; ASH 2022, New Orleans LA, USA; IMS 2021, Vienna, Austria; etc.). Since 2012, Dr. Milan is teaching assistant within the course of Cellular and Molecular Biology at Vita-Salute San Raffaele University.
