Carlos Fernández de Larrea, MD, PhD, was born in 1978. He studied medicine in Caracas, obtaining the distinction Summa Cum Laude. He moved to Barcelona where he completed his training in Hematology at Hospital Clínic. His doctoral thesis was on complete remission in multiple myeloma, obtaining the Extraordinary Award of the University of Barcelona in 2012. He has spent training periods at the Institut Pasteur in Paris, the Centre for Systemic Amyloidosis of Pavia, the National Cancer Institute (NIH) in Bethesda, as well as Visiting Investigator at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York for 18 months, working in CAR-T cells for myeloma.
He is currently medical staff (Consultor) of the Department of Hematology and member of the Amyloidosis and Myeloma Unit at Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, research group leader at IDIBAPS (Myeloma, amyloidosis and macroglobulinemia group) and Associate Professor of Medicine in the University of Barcelona. He participates actively in clinical trials as principal investigator in phase I, II and III trials in multiple myeloma, amyloidosis and macroglobulinemia.
