Tampa General Hospital
Tampa, Florida, United States
Dr. Ivan Borrello is currently the Director of Multiple Myeloma, Bone Marrow Transplant, and Cell Therapy at Tampa General Hospital Cancer Institute. He also serves as Associate Director of Innovation and Technology. Having been involved in the field of cancer immunology and immunotherapy since its infancy in the 1990s, he is currently recognized as one of the leaders in the field of immunotherapy of hematologic malignancies as well as bone marrow transplants. His research has focused on developing immune-based therapies in myeloma. He has pioneered the use of marrow infiltrating lymphocytes (MILs) as a source of tumor enriched T cells for adoptive T cell therapy which has also focused on understanding the biology mediating the enhanced anti-tumor specificity of these cells. This work has primarily been carried out in multiple myeloma in the autologous transplant setting and in the post-allogeneic transplant setting using non-gene modified, ex vivo activated cells. Additional work has focused on understanding how the MILs can be used as the T cell source in CAR-T cell use as well as in combination with additional immune-based therapies. He has also pioneered the use of an allogeneic GM-CSF-based myeloma vaccine that is currently being tested in the minimal residual disease setting as an approach to prolong progression free survival..
