Senior Scientist, Hematologist
Princess Margaret Cancer Centre
Auckland, Auckland, New Zealand
Dr. Rodger Tiedemann, MBChB PhD FRACP FRCPA, is The Antony and Margaret Morris Fellow in Cancer Research at the University of Auckland, New Zealand and an affiliated Senior Scientist at The Princess Margaret Cancer Centre in Toronto, Canada. He is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the Universities of Auckland and Toronto, Consultant Hematologist at Auckland City Hospital and Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia. Dr. Tiedemann received Medicine and Surgery degrees and a Ph.D. examining superantigen immune cell activation at the University of Auckland. Prior to these studies, he was a national representative to the 29th International Mathematics Olympiad and a prize winner in the Australian Mathematics Competition. Following Hematology training he completed post-doctoral research studies in multiple myeloma at the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, AZ, USA with under the mentorship of Drs. Keith Stewart, Leif Bergsagel and Rafael Fonseca. He joined the staff at Mayo Clinic as Senior Associate Consultant Hematologist in 2008 and Assistant Professor at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine in 2009. From genome-wide siRNA studies he identified XPO1 and MCL1 as critical vulnerabilities in MM cells. After moving to Toronto, Canada, in 2010 his laboratory research program focused on the study of immature MM cells that may prevent cure. For translational research, he received an American Society of Hematology (ASH) Scholar Award in 2009 and the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) Rawls Prize in 2018. In late 2022, he returned to New Zealand for family reasons, whilst continuing his Toronto lab research program. Current projects in his lab are aimed at the characterization of MM stem/progenitor cells using single cell multi-omics; exploration of the role of genomic CNVs such as gain(1q) in MM cell biology; and the development of novel immunotherapeutics for MM and related disorders.
